The love affair between the Republican party and the Project For the New American Century has done exactly that. They did not hesitate. They tried. They lost. And now there is a funeral pyre. Except the fire is not here in the USA; it is in Iraq. They ended up wallowing in the mire, after all, and they've dragged the rest of us along.
