space: Star eats planet Unlike our solar system, many extrasolar planetary systems have planets the
size of Jupiter, or even bigger, orbiting as close to their stars as Mercury — a
highly unstable situation. The only explanation astronomers have for this
situation is that the planets are slowly falling towards their star, which then
either engulfs them or bounces them off into space.
