I was going to go quite a bit further with my thoughts on this but as I was looking around for comparisons on the subsidies the government gives to the airlines and highway maintenance versus the subsidies alloted and now potentially eliminated for Amtrak, I ran into an excellent post, very well researched, at MyDD.
