A new drug that delivers a widely used cancer medicine in a novel way significantly improves the medicine's effectiveness while avoiding many of the serious side effects, doctors reported here on Friday.

The new drug, Abraxane, is a form of paclitaxel, the generic name for Taxol, which is used to treat various forms of cancer. In a clinical trial involving 460 women with breast cancer that had spread elsewhere in their bodies, tumors shrank in 33 percent of those who received Abraxane compared with 19 percent of those who received Taxol.
